Discovery Bible Study
THE OVERVIEW
A Discovery Bible Study (or DBS) is a tool often used in Disciple Making Movements (DMM) all around the world. It is a one of the many building blocks. It is used to equip people who want to learn who Jesus is, for people who have already decided to follow Jesus, for the training of leaders, but also for personal Bible study. The basic idea of a Discovery Bible Study is that God's Word and God's Spirit together are powerful enough to make real disciples and strong leaders. It is not about learning a lesson, but obedience-based discipleship; to discover who Jesus is, and to see for ourselves what God asks of us. All by using only the Bible. In a DBS group setting, the leader is not the teacher, but only the person who leads by asking questions. Interesting; Jesus often taught people by asking good questions.
THE PROCESS
1. Look Back
• Community Care / Worship: Gratitude & Challenges
• Accountability: Obedience-based discipleship means following up with what we said we are going to do.
2. Look Up
• New Scripture
• Read twice (preferably in two different translations) • Have someone retell the Scripture in their own words.
• Questions
• What does this Scripture say about God?
• What does this Scripture say about people or humanity?
• What am I going to do about what I just heard?
• Who will I share this with ?
3. Look Forward
• Create an “I will statement” and share with your community or at least one other person.
• Prayer
